Prime Minister never gave light to Iran’s acts but explicitly expresses concern in Australia about growing adversarial nature | Australian foreign policy

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced support for US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, emphasizing the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining atomic weapons. However, he did not confirm whether Australia received advance notice of the US attack, stating that this was a unilateral action by the US. Albanese also clarified that no Australian resources or support were provided for the strikes and called for Iran to return to negotiations to avoid full-scale war in the Middle East, echoing the need for diplomatic solutions.

The federal Coalition, led by Penny Wong, the Foreign Affairs Minister, aligned with the US on preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons, yet international law experts criticized their support for the strikes as weak, arguing the strikes were in violation of international law. They called for Australia to uphold the principles of international law against the background of the escalating conflict.

The US had not requested Australian assistance in future military operations, according to Wong, who also advised Australians in Iran and Israel to evacuate if possible and provided updates on the deployment of Australian officials to assist in the evacuation efforts at the Iran-Azerbaijan border.

The situation underscored the need for continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation in the region.
