Public Outcry Sweeps Nationwide in Response to Trump’s Tightening Immigration Policies | U.S. News

Demonstrations against the Trump administration’s enhanced immigration raids, focused on Los Angeles, expanded across the US on Tuesday, encompassing cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Omaha, and Seattle.

New York City saw a significant turnout at Foley Square as thousands gathered to protest the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some protesters carried signs such as “ICE out of New York,” while others chanted, “Why are you in riot gear? I don’t see any riot here?”

Shirley, a 29-year-old protester, decried the Trump administration’s targeting of workers, framing it as opposed to the country’s founding principles, with a massive Mexican flag draped across her back. She voiced her heritage as rooted in immigrant parents and emphasized the importance of remembering the United States’ origins as a nation of immigrants.

Brooklyn Councilmember Shahana Hanif addressed the assembly in Foley Square, criticizing both the Trump administration and New York’s Mayor, Eric Adams, for their crackdown on immigrants. She voiced her commitment to maintaining New York as a sanctuary city and called for increased protections for international students. The crowd responded with enthusiastic support to her calls to cease attacks and assaults on students.

Elsewhere, demonstrations unfolded outside an immigration court in Chicago, with attendees marching through the city, chanting “No more deportations!” and creating a musical display with drums.

During one tense moment, a vehicle narrowly missed the anti-ICE protesters, an incident captured on video by WGN TV News. In metro Atlanta, solidarity with Los Angeles was shown through a march along Buford Highway, as reported by 11 Alive News.

In Omaha, protesters chanted “Chinga la migra” following reports of approximately 80 arrests in an immigration raid on a meat-packing plant. Similarly, in Seattle, around 50 protesters gathered to show support for those in Los Angeles, with the Seattle Times documenting their efforts to block homeland security vehicles with e-bikes and e-scooters.

Additionally, large-scale protests took place in Dallas and Austin on Monday, with an anticipated 1,800 protests planned nationally for Saturday, coinciding with the military parade Donald Trump is hosting to celebrate his birthday in the nation’s capital.
