Queensland Premier rejects calls for altering coal royalty rates, rebuffs mining sector demands | Australia updates

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has firmly ruled out any changes to the state’s coal royalties regime, in response to pressure from the coal industry. The Labor government implemented the policy in 2022, during a time of high coal prices, which led to the collection of over $10 billion for the state budget in a single year. Despite a significant drop in royalties revenue alongside coal prices, the Premier has reassured that the policy will remain unchanged. The scheme, criticized by the industry as the world’s highest, imposes a progressive royalty tax, ranging from 20% for coal prices above $175 per tonne to 40% for prices above $300 per tonne, compared to single-digit rates in other jurisdictions. Critics argue that the high royalty rates pose a threat to the industry and could lead to mine closures. However, Crisafulli emphasized the government’s commitment to the industry and regional development, asserting that the high royalties have little impact on coal companies’ profits. The debate reflects broader discussions on the economic sustainability of the coal industry amidst increasing environmental concerns and the global shift towards renewable energy sources.
