A woman in her 50s suffered significant arm injuries after being attacked by an animal while watching keepers at work at Darling Downs Zoo, located 50km south of Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. The zoo is home to big cats such as lions, tigers, and leopards. The woman was reportedly experienced with the safety protocols of the animal enclosure but still sustained severe damage to her arm. The zoo stated that no other staff members or members of the public were at risk, and the animal involved did not leave its enclosure. The woman was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital via the Life Flight rescue helicopter and is in stable condition. The zoo is currently investigating the incident and is grateful for the support received from the Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police Service, and LifeFlight. The zoo also clarified that the injured person was not a keeper or immediate family member. The zoo has confirmed that the animal involved would not be put down or punished as a result of the incident. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is also investigating the incident. The zoo was closed for the remainder of Sunday but will reopen the following day.
