Queensland’s top police officer states that handling domestic violence cases is not the main priority for law enforcement.

Domestic violence case management is not the core responsibility of the police, and other agencies should take on a greater role in this, according to the acting police commissioner of Queensland. In a 100-day review of their operations and structure, the Queensland police service believes that officers have been increasingly tasked with non-core functions such as mental health response, domestic and family violence case management, and prisoner transport. Acting police commissioner Shane Chelepy stated at a press conference that the role of policing has changed to address societal issues. The police need to better define their responsibilities and seek clearer referral processes to other agencies to help handle the repeat calls for service. The police minister, Dan Purdie, believes shifting resources back to crime detection and prevention will help refocus Queeensland Police Service on its core priorities of fighting crime. The government is already making investments in other agencies to address the slack in this area.
