Amy Coney Barrett, the conservative Supreme Court justice appointed by Donald Trump, has been labeled a “DEI judge” by irate right-wing individuals after she voted to reject Trump’s attempt to freeze almost $2 billion in foreign aid. Despite being part of the court’s right-wing majority, Coney Barrett sided with Chief Justice John Roberts to uphold a decision by a US district judge, which ordered the Trump administration to release the frozen aid for foreign aid work. This move did not sit well with pro-Trump right-wing commentators and activists. Mike Cernovich, a right-wing influencer, accused her of being “evil” and a DEI hire, while Mark Levin stated that she had “deceived people into thinking she was a reliable constitutionalist”. Laura Loomer and Jack Posobiec also criticized her by claiming that Coney Barrett was a DEI appointee. However, these accusations are surprising, given Barrett’s conservative track record, including her vote to overturn Roe v Wade and her frequent alignment with the court’s most conservative justices.
