Marco Rubio announced that he would not address Donald Trump’s threat to “take over Canada” during his visit to Quebec, as the U.S. secretary of state arrived in the midst of a severe diplomatic crisis and trade war. The visit, which took place at the G7 summit at La Malbaie, was the first meeting of foreign ministers from allied countries since Trump’s return to power with his “America first” agenda. Rubiosaid that discussions during the summit would focus on issues such as defence and Ukraine, but not on plans to take over Canada. He reiterated this stance despite Trump’s repeated comments on making Canada the 51st US state. European countries are taking retaliatory measures against Trump’s targeted tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, deepening their trade conflict with the United States.
