Karin Koch decided to host the world’s first animal poo painting competition following her purchase of a detailed cattle manure painting by artist Werner Härtl. Koch then commissioned Tasmanian artist Mel Hills to depict wombats using wombat feces and a pademelon with pademelon droppings collected from her garden. She observed that since an entire museum dedicated to animal feces had never been established, despite its scientific intrigue, and so she opened the Pooseum in Tasmania. The annual Poo-tastic Tasmania Paint Off, which requires participants to be at least 16 years old due to the need for them to gather and manipulate animal droppings, is now in its second year with the theme of Expressive Portraits: Faces with Faeces. Winners will have their work exhibited at the Pooseum in Richmond, Tasmania.
