Pastor Ian Wilkinson expressed forgiveness towards Erin Patterson for attempting to murder him but stated he cannot forgive her for killing three other individuals with poisoned beef wellingtons. The court in Melbourne heard this during the supreme court on Monday. Wilkinson, who survived a death cap mushroom poisoning in 2023 after Patterson served the lunch that led to the deaths of his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, mentioned that he had not fully recovered from his ordeal. Patterson was previously convicted of the murders and is currently facing sentencing by Justice Christopher Beale. During the plea hearing on Monday, the court listened to victim impact statements, with 28 available for Beale’s consideration. Wilkinson praised his late wife Heather for her wise character and lamented the devastating effects the poisoning had on his family. He expressed distress over Patterson’s actions, noting the senselessness of resorting to murder to solve problems. The court also heard statements from other victims’ family members, who were deeply affected by the tragedy. Simon Patterson, Erin’s estranged husband, had his statement read by a cousin, expressing his sorrow and the broken home their children now face. Others, including Heather’s sister and some of Don’s relatives, also had their statements read into court. Tim Patterson, Don’s niece, recalled his role model status and the despair felt upon witnessing his death up close. The hearing also included discussions on the impact of intense media coverage, with family members finding it difficult to grieve privately. Erin Patterson, appearing more gaunt than usual, was not required to speak except to confirm her personal details. The court will hear from Jenny Hosking, Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Victoria, later about Patterson’s time in custody.
