A young woman dedicated to taking care of her disabled mother since the tender age of eight is now facing an unexpected twist in her life, all thanks to the benevolence of Guardian readers. After their generosity, she has been able to clear a £2,000 fine she was inaccurately handed for a misstep involving socially criticized welfare rules.
Rose Jones, now 22 years old, received an unforeseen directive from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). It asked her to repay £2,145. This surprising order stemmed from participating in a government’s youth employment initiative. The Kickstart scheme resulted in her unwittingly overstepping stringent carer’s allowance income limits.
Miss Jones expressed that she had been twice misinformed by her employment advisor at the jobcentre. She was assured her earnings under the Kickstart program would not affect her carer’s allowance eligibility.
However, less than a year after completing the six-month scheme, the same government department that had previously supported her via wages, now demanded she reimburse £2,145 for overclaimed benefits.
Emily Holzhausen, the director of policy at Carers UK, described the situation as heart-wrenching. She spoke on how a young person already facing life’s challenges should not have been let down so grievously by the DWP.
