When Koss Siwers returned to his pub in the outback of Queensland, he found that nothing was where he left it, and everything was covered in mud. Residents of Adavale, located 900km west of Brisbane, have started returning to their tiny outpost after being evacuated due to widespread flooding. Siwers described the Adavale pub as an “absolute mess” and said that mud was five to 10 centimeters thick. The furniture was scattered as if someone had ransacked the place. Fridges, freezers, and beds were all damaged, but the building remained structurally sound. Almost 80 State Emergency Services personnel are helping communities affected by an area the size of New South Wales. Senior Constable Chris Seng, the only police officer in Adavale, teamed up with another resident to help ferry people to safety, risking his life by crossing fast-moving waters. Siwers plans to use some charity donations to provide beer for volunteers and locals starting Monday. Over 1,000 bales of hay have been distributed to affected areas, and the flooding has killed 150,000 sheep, cattle, and goats.
