Southern Australia Bracing for Scorching Weekend, Eagerly Awats Melbourne’s Hottest April Day in Four Years | Australian Climate Update

South-east Australia is bracing for an unusually warm weekend, with temperatures forecast to be up to 12°C above the average in certain areas of Victoria and Melbourne. Residents are expected to experience the warmest April days in the past four years. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts that Melbourne will hit a maximum of 30°C on both Saturday and Sunday, while Sydney will see temperatures rise to 26°C during the weekend. Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore attributes this to a broad and slow-moving high-pressure system affecting south-east Australia and extending into the Tasman Sea. He notes that while the forecast is not record-breaking, the warmth is atypical for this time of year.

Adelaide is anticipated to endure a streak of five consecutive days with temperatures soaring above 30°C starting this Saturday. This warmup follows Australia’s hottest 12-month period on record, capped off with the warmest March. Dr. Andrew King from the University of Melbourne highlights the significant rate at which the planet is warming, linked to the rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Fire danger is predicted across various districts in South Australia and parts of Victoria on Sunday. Western Australia is also set to witness a heat trough, accompanied by late showers and storms in the far south-west. Perth is expected to reach 26°C on Saturday, with Hobart possibly hitting 22°C. The warm weather is forecast to persist through early next week, including parts of South Australia, Victoria, and southern New South Wales, with cooler air anticipated to return just in time for Easter. The nation’s land surface has warmed by 1.5°C since 1910, emphasizing the impact of the climate crisis on extreme weather events.
