Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket, with a focus on extending his successful Test career, particularly aiming for the Ashes series against England during the upcoming Australian summer.
Following Australia’s exit from the Champions Trophy semi-finals after a loss to India, Smith notified his teammates of his decision to step away from the 50-over format.
The 35-year-old remains committed to Test cricket and will also continue to play in the Twenty20 international format.
“I feel that I still have a lot to offer in Test cricket,” declared Smith in a statement on Wednesday, expressing his eagerness for the upcoming World Test Championship final, the tour of the West Indies in the winter, and the Ashes series at home.
Smith, who has consistently evaluated his career on a series-by-series basis, has decided to end his ODI career after amassing 5800 runs in 170 matches, with an average of 43.28. Despite this, he has expressed a deep appreciation for the experiences and memories gained from representing Australia, including his dual 50-over World Cup victories.
“The time has now come for others to step up and begin preparing for the 2027 World Cup,” Smith remarked, feeling it is the right moment to make room for the next generation of players.
