Sussan Ley has been elected as Australia’s first female opposition leader, defeating Angus Taylor in the race for the Liberal leadership. The Liberal MPs met at Parliament House on Tuesday morning to elect a new leadership team, following their defeat in the 3 May federal election. Ley, who has been a member of parliament since 2001, was the party’s deputy leader under Peter Dutton. She is now the most senior woman in the party’s 80-year history and also the first regionally based opposition leader since the 1990s. The 63-year-old Ley has served as a minister under Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull, and Scott Morrison, but resigned from cabinet in 2017 due to an expenses scandal. The new leadership team will be speaking to the media later today.
