A man was killed by police on Saturday afternoon while armed with a large machete outside Mount Druitt Westfield in western Sydney. Police allege that the man was approaching a group of women involved in a fighting incident in the car park, which included his wife.
Assistant Police Commissioner, Gavin Wood, confirmed that the six women involved in the altercation were strangers to each other. The man ran to his car and retrieved the machete before walking towards the women. The police intervened by ordering him to drop the weapon. When he refused and continued advancing, the officers fired their guns, killing him on the spot.
Wood reviewed the CCTV footage and officers’ body-worn video, and praised their actions as commendable and brave. He emphasized that they are good people and officers who did not come to work expecting to shoot someone.
