The Australian government has authorized a contentious windfarm to be built on Robbins Island off northwest Tasmania. This decision will reportedly come with stringent measures to safeguard several endangered species, including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot. The project will include up to 100 turbines, a 1.2km bridge to the mainland, a 500-metre wharf, and four quarries. Environment Minister Murray Watt approved the renewable energy company Acen Australia’s plan and emphasized the nation’s need for additional renewable energy sources. The agreement comes with numerous conditions to protect the local wildlife. Some have criticized the project, claiming it will harm the ecological balance of the area as it is also the most significant location for migratory shorebirds in Tasmania.
