An internal rift within the Labor party has been mended, paving the way for protective legislation for Tasmania’s salmon industry, which faces legal scrutiny over its potential harm to the endangered Maugean Skate. The agreement was established after lengthy deliberations among Labor’s environment committee members, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental reforms, particularly if re-elected. Anthony Albanese has taken charge of this legislative effort, setting aside concerns raised by the federal EPA. Despite resistance, Labor remains firm in its support for the industry while emphasizing adherence to environmental science. Both the state Liberal government and Tasmanian Labor officials have pushed for amendments to overhaul the process of environmental assessments that could constrain salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour, following a legal challenge. In response to the internal party discussions, Anthony Albanese has stated that Labor is unapologetic in supporting jobs, citing the levels of the Maugean Skate as justification for their stance on the salmon industry. The opposition, under Peter Dutton, has also confirmed their support for the legislation. Meanwhile, some environmental groups have shifted their focus from attacking the Coalition’s nuclear power proposals to criticizing Labor and Albanese for their position on the salmon industry’s impact.
