On Friday, Sanjeev Kumar, a 44-year-old gynecologist from Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested on accusations of sexually abusing four women and reusing unsanitary medical devices in unnecessary procedures. According to the charges, Kumar enticed these women to travel to his clinic to undergo medical procedures that turned out to be sexual abuse. Between 2019 and 2024, the accused allegedly performed unnecessary gynecological examinations using improperly sterilized equipment or equipment intended for single-use. He then submitted false claims to Medicare and Medicaid for these unnecessary treatments, making a significant amount of money from these criminal acts. A hysteroscopy, a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus, was among the examinations allegedly performed by Kumar. The acting US attorney for the western district of Tennessee, Reagan Fondren, stated that Kumar was the highest-paid provider for these services in the state and profited from these crimes. The FBI’s special agent in charge, Joseph E Carrico, added that there may be more victims and emitted a message to them, asserting that what happened was not their fault and encouraged others to come forward as their voices can lead to more people speaking out.
