Thailand has accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire agreement reached on Monday, claiming that despite a deal aimed at ending five days of fighting, clashes continued. According to Maj General Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, Cambodia attacked Thai territory in multiple locations overnight. Winthai stated that Thailand views this as a deliberate violation of the agreement, aimed at destroying trust. He added that the Thai military immediately stopped firing at midnight, but responded to Cambodia’s actions.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated in a Facebook message on Tuesday morning that the frontline had eased since the ceasefire at midnight. An AFP journalist in Cambodia’s Samraong city, located 20 km from the border, confirmed that the sound of blasts stopped 30 minutes before midnight and the lull continued until dawn.
The two sides had previously agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on Monday, following talks in Malaysia aimed at halting the worst fighting between the neighboring countries in more than a decade. At least 38 people have been killed and over 300,000 displaced by the clashes that erupted on the shared border on Thursday.
International pressure to end the fighting has increased, with Donald Trump warning that trade negotiations would be paused until the clashes cease. Thailand and Cambodia may face a 36% US tariff starting from August 1st. Malaysia, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional bloc, hosted the ceasefire talks, which were also attended by officials from the US and China.
Thailand authorities have warned people evacuated from border areas not to return home until further notice, and there is a mix of hope and skepticism among affected communities. The peace deal included a plan for military commanders from both sides to meet, which was delayed due to Thailand’s accusations of a ceasefire violation by Cambodia. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, described the ceasefire agreement as a vital first step towards de-escalation and peace. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for both countries to respect the agreement and work towards longstanding issues for lasting peace.
