The exhibitions, Nature’s Wild with Andil Gosine and Before the Americas, were scheduled to open in March and were inspired by topics such as ecology, sexuality, human rights, and the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. The move to cancel the shows coincides with Trump’s executive order directing a review of international organizations that receive US funding. Artists and curators involved in the exhibitions have expressed their shock and disappointment, viewing the decision as an act of preemptive surrender to Trump’s policies. The cancellation has also drawn criticisms of potential silence and inaction from cultural institutions in response to political pressure.
