The media watchdog Ofcom urges technology companies to take stronger measures in tackling the spread of ‘revenge porn’ online

The UK communications watchdog, Ofcom, is proposing that tech platforms use hash-matching technology to combat the increase in explicit deepfakes and “revenge porn” targeting women and girls online. This technology allows platforms to quickly identify and remove intimate images that have been shared without permission by cross-referencing them against a database of known images. Ofcom also suggests that platforms should use “nudges” to deter harmful comments and design default settings that prioritize the privacy of female customers. The draft guidance goes beyond existing laws and is open for feedback, with the final guidance to be published later this year. Melanie Dawes, Ofcom’s chief executive, emphasizes that protecting female users is both a moral and commercial necessity.
