The Structure Exceeds the Location’s Capacity: Independent Planning Commission Recommends Against Constructing a Tasmanian AFL Stadium | Tasmania

The proposed AFL stadium in Tasmania has encountered significant opposition, as a planning report concludes that the project is too large for the site and not economically justifiable. The final report by the state’s planning commission advises against building the $945 million Macquarie Point venue, which is a prerequisite for Tasmania’s entry into the AFL in 2028.

The recommendation in the report is not mandatory but could influence a parliamentary vote on the project’s approval. It highlights the proposed stadium’s potential to negatively affect Hobart’s landscape, as well as its historical and cultural heritage. The massive structure is deemed likely to inhibit the area from becoming a vibrant and appealing space outside of major events.

According to the report, the construction and operation of the stadium would impose a significant social cost to Tasmanians, with an estimated $1 billion in construction debts and a total of $1.8 billion over a decade. The state Liberal government has vowed to cap its contribution at $375 million. Although both the Liberal and Labor parties support the stadium, it could face difficulties passing through the independent-dominated upper house, where several members are anti-stadium or undecided.

Critics argue that a new stadium is unnecessary since the AFL is already played at two other venues and that the site chosen is not suitable. Additionally, they contend that the project would exacerbate the state’s growing budget deficit. The AFL requirement for a roofed venue at the site was a condition for granting Tasmania the 19th licence to the league, leading to calls for a renegotiation of the agreement. Despite these challenges, the AFL continues to insist on the principle of “no stadium, no team.”

The proposed stadium remains a contentious and complex issue for Tasmania’s infrastructure development.
