An MP is requesting action against reckless parking at Peak District tourist hotspots, which he attributes to a TikTok craze. Jon Pearce, the Labour MP for High Peak in Derbyshire, mentioned that people are visiting the area in large numbers to witness sunrise and sunset at Mam Tor. The increased traffic has led to several incidents involving poorly parked vehicles causing disruptions. In January, road maintenance vehicles were blocked from access by approximately 200 cars double-parked near Mam Tor. Pearce stated that the situation is exacerbated by the recent social media trend and is calling for better preparation for the summer influx.
In a letter to Peak District authorities and local councils, Pearce highlighted the deteriorating parking situation since February and called for stronger enforcement, including higher fines, improved signage, and a review of parking infrastructure expansion. Local residents are concerned about the unsightly parking and its impact. It’s been suggested that boulders could be placed along the road near Mam Tor to prevent further instances of irresponsible parking. The Peak District national park authorities have recognized the concerns and are planning to address them with the help of accurate and current data.
