The White House is planning to reduce staffing at the Central Intelligence Agency by 1,200 positions, and other intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency, will also lose thousands of jobs, according to a report by the Washington Post. A source familiar with the plan confirmed these changes to the Associated Press, noting that these cuts will occur over several years through reduced hiring rather than layoffs, and include employees who have chosen early retirement. The Trump administration informed Congress about the planned cuts, emphasizing that they aim to align the CIA with President Trump’s national security priorities and infuse the agency with renewed energy. The agency’s director, John Ratcliffe, is focused on increasing the CIA’s use of intelligence from human sources and enhancing its focus on China. These cuts are part of Trump’s efforts to downsize the federal workforce, and the CIA and NSA have already initiated voluntary redundancy programs. Additionally, the administration has eliminated diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at intelligence agencies, though some terminations related to these programs are currently being blocked by a court ruling. There have also been sudden firings of high-ranking officials, such as the former director of the NSA and the Pentagon’s Cyber Command.
