The SSA, responsible for administering social insurance programs including retirement and disability benefits, is facing challenges such as a record number of recipients and significant budget cuts. Despite the challenges, social security remains popular with Americans, although it has been labeled a “Ponzi scheme” by tech mogul Elon Musk. Musk’s so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge) is currently slashing staff and budgets. Staff at the SSA are reportedly being forced to take reassignments or face firings, and there have been orders to return to the office five days a week. The SSA has also been criticized for not being transparent about why 7,000 jobs were cut and why offices are being closed. Experts have raised concerns that the current situation at the SSA will only continue to worsen if drastic changes are not made.
