Donald Trump underwent his yearly medical examination on Friday, providing the potential for the public to receive details about the health status of a man who, in January, became the oldest person ever inaugurated as U.S. president. Trump stated ahead of the exam, conducted at Walter Reed national military medical center in Bethesda, Maryland, “I have never felt better, but nevertheless, these things must be done!” The duration of the exam remains unclear, but Trump spent over five hours at the center before boarding Air Force One and heading to Florida for the weekend.
Despite previous scrutiny of Joe Biden’s mental and physical health, Trump has kept specifics about his own health under wraps. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, promised a comprehensive report from the White House physician and confirmed that Trump is in “very good shape” without being under anesthesia.
In 2018, a White House doctor declared Trump to be in excellent overall health but advised him to lose weight and adopt a daily exercise routine. The last public information on Trump’s health followed a July assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Texas representative Ronny Jackson simply noted a gunshot wound to Trump’s right ear.
When asked about releasing his medical records, Trump has expressed willingness but never followed through. Trump is three years younger than Biden and was the oldest person inaugurated as U.S. president. This secrecy surrounding the president’s health records has been standard, with past instances of concealment including President Woodrow Wilson’s debilitating stroke in 1919.
