The New South Wales parliament is conducting an inquiry into who was aware of information regarding a caravan laden with explosives found near Sydney before controversial legislation passed through parliament. The inquiry, proposed by independent MP Rod Roberts and supported by the opposition, the Greens, and two members of the crossbench, will investigate the relationship between the Dural caravan incident and parliamentary debates on legislation.
The inquiry, however, will not examine whether the legislation should have been passed or repealed. Minns and his police minister, Yasmin Catley, have faced criticism for their knowledge of the police belief that the caravan incident was not a terror event but a “con job” by organized crime, and whether they knew this before hate speech and religious worship bills were rushed through state parliament.
Some members of the crossbench have expressed concerns that they may have been “misled” when the laws were introduced and passed. The inquiry will examine what Minns, Catley, and the attorney general, Michael Daley, knew about the caravan plot from mid-January until the legislation passed.
