Schools, airports, public transport, and most businesses in Brisbane and across south-east Queensland are shutting down in preparation for the expected arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred on Friday morning. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts Alfred to make landfall between Maroochydore and Coolangatta early on Friday morning as a category two system. Gales are expected to affect a large section of the coastline, stretching from Double Island Point to north of Grafton. The region could face up to 800mm of rain, with localized flash flooding possible. Residents are warned to stay indoors and off the road during high winds. Sandbags are being distributed to help with preparations. The Queensland premier, David Crisafulli, has requested assistance from the Australian Defence Force.
