Trump administration to terminate Planned Parenthood family planning funds beyond a year

Planned Parenthood, a provider of reproductive health services, has announced that the Trump administration plans to cut funding for federal family planning programs starting Tuesday. This decision will impact access to birth control, cancer screenings, and other services for low-income individuals.

The organization stated that nine of its affiliates received notification that funding would be withheld under the Title X program, which has provided healthcare services to low-income individuals since 1970. The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Health and Human Services intends to freeze $27.5 million in family planning grants for organizations including Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood operates over 300 health centers within the Title X network, which received more than 1.5 million visits in 2023. Although the exact amount of funding that would be halted by the Trump administration was not specified, it is evident that this decision will have significant consequences.

Neither the White House nor the Department of Health and Human Services has responded to requests for comment. An HHS spokesperson mentioned last week that the department is reviewing grant recipients to ensure compliance with President Trump’s executive orders.

Alexis McGill Johnson, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, predicts that this decision will lead to undetected cancers, reduced access to birth control, and an increase in sexually transmitted infections. She stated, “President Trump and Elon Musk are pushing their dangerous political agenda, denying healthcare access to people across the nation and disregarding the devastating impact it will have.”

Trump has appointed billionaire Elon Musk, who supported his presidential candidacy, to lead an initiative aimed at cutting government agency spending.

Conservatives have long advocated for defunding Planned Parenthood due to its provision of abortion services. However, it is important to note that since 1977, US government funding for nearly all abortions has been prohibited.
