A judge in Illinois has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration that aimed to challenge Chicago’s sanctuary laws limiting cooperation between federal immigration agents and local police. The lawsuit, which was filed in February, claimed that these laws hindered federal efforts to enforce immigration laws. However, Judge Lindsay Jenkins of the northern district of Illinois granted the defendants’ motion for dismissal. Chicago’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating that the city is safer when police focus on the needs of its residents. Governor JB Pritzker also welcomed the ruling, emphasizing that Illinois has defeated the Trump administration in federal court. The justice department and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet responded to requests for comment. This lawsuit is part of a series of lawsuits filed by the administration targeting state or city policies perceived as interfering with immigration enforcement. Chicago has a long history as a sanctuary city and has strengthened its laws several times, including during Trump’s first term.
