US President Donald Trump disclosed in an interview with Fox News that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him during their conversation that China would not invade Taiwan over his tenure. This conversation took place on the eve of Trump’s discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Moscow’s incursion into Ukraine. During his appearance on Fox News’ Special Report, Trump mentioned President Xi’s statement about not invading Taiwan as long as Trump remains in office, with a cautious outlook on future developments. In response to this, Trump expressed his acknowledgment but also referenced Xi’s mention of China’s patience. The Chinese embassy in Washington has yet to comment on the subject. This conversation follows their initial call in June, which marked the beginning of Trump’s second term. China has consistently maintained its stance on claiming Taiwan as its territory, even if by force, whereas Taiwan disputes these assertions. Despite being a primary arms supplier for Taiwan, the US, like most nations, does not have official diplomatic relations with the island.
