Donald Trump has vowed to impose a 200% tariff on all alcoholic beverages imported from EU countries as a retaliation to what he has termed as the EU’s “nasty” 50% levy on bourbon whiskey. The tariffs on such products from the EU, Canada, Mexico, and China could potentially push the US economy into recession. Despite the trade war initiated by Trump, the EU has responded in kind with a €26bn countermeasure to Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. Mainstream economists argue that tariffs are not the solution to bring back jobs as Trump claims, and this stance has triggered significant stock market sell-offs.
