Trump signals support for controversial UK proposal regarding Chagos Islands dispute | The Question of Chagos Islands

Donald Trump has indicated support for a proposal allowing the UK to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, including the Diego Garcia military base, to Mauritius, despite the base being jointly operated by the US. Trump stated during a press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he anticipates the negotiations will proceed smoothly. This stance may come as a surprise to UK officials who anticipated resistance to the idea. Previously, the UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, had mentioned that the US has an effective veto on the plan due to the joint control of Diego Garcia. The Conservative party had also voiced objections to the agreement, fearing significant financial compensation for Mauritius. Starmer argues that these talks, initiated under the previous government, are crucial for securing the military base’s future, especially following international court rulings questioning UK control over the islands. Critics, however, question the deal’s necessity and the financial implications for the UK.
