The Republican-controlled House of Representatives plans to pass President Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill in the early hours of Thursday, following weeks of division within the party regarding how much spending should be cut. The bill, which includes extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, creating new breaks for tipped income and auto loans, ending green-energy subsidies, and increasing military and immigration enforcement spending, cleared a procedural hurdle in the House on Wednesday evening. Despite deep divisions within the party, Republican leaders are confident that the bill will pass the House. The US’s debt is expected to increase by $3.8 trillion over the next decade, and credit rating firm Moody’s has lowered the US government’s credit rating due to the growing debt. The bill, which includes work requirements for the Medicaid program, exempts firearm silencers from registration requirements and eliminates a $200 tax on firearm accessories. Democrats have expressed strong opposition to the legislation, stating that Republicans are kicking millions of Americans off their healthcare and food benefits in order to finance tax cuts for billionaires.
