The home secretary, Yvette Cooper, has dismissed the Amess family’s request for a public inquiry into Sir David Amess’s death, a decision described by the family as both “insulting” and “unacceptable.” In a letter sent to Lady Julia Amess and Katie Amess, Cooper argued that an inquiry wouldn’t offer anything beyond what’s already been covered by Ali Harbi Ali’s trial and the Prevent learning review. Lady Amess insisted that Keir Starmer should reconsider the government’s stance before their meeting with the prime minister and home secretary on Wednesday. Katie Amess was deeply affected by what she called an “adding salt to an open wound,” expressing sadness, betrayal, pain, and heartache over their loss. They pointed out that Ali was known to Prevent seven years before the attack and argued for accountability and a public inquiry for their father’s preventable death.
