A government taskforce has recommended that airline and airport staff undergo mandatory training in disability and accessibility awareness. The aim is to alleviate the stress and harm experienced by passengers who require assistance while traveling. The taskforce, led by crossbench peer and former Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, stated in a report that the flying experience for disabled individuals can be inconsistent and sometimes catastrophic. The report calls for clearer information and standard practices regarding mobility equipment and guide dogs, as well as improved accessibility and complaints procedures. Disabled passengers have reported being treated in an undignified manner by airport security staff, highlighting security as a key area of concern. Stories of disabled passengers facing neglect and mistreatment have been in the headlines recently. Grey-Thompson’s report warns of a lack of training and awareness among security staff in dealing with disabled passengers and their equipment. The report also highlights confusion among passengers when it comes to booking and airline policies regarding seats, companions, assistance dogs, and medical equipment. Limited awareness of non-visible impairments contributes to unintentional exclusion and undignified treatment. The report notes the need for better handling of mobility aids, which are often damaged when stored in the hold, and for addressing battery safety requirements that can cause stress and harm to passengers. While Gray-Thompson acknowledges the international nature of aviation as a challenge, she emphasizes the importance of goodwill and cooperation. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, 5.5 million passengers requested assistance at UK airports in 2024, representing a 40% increase compared to before the pandemic. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that everyone deserves to travel with dignity and be respected, and welcomed the report’s findings. Executives from Airlines UK and AirportsUK also expressed commitment to making flying more accessible to all through implementation of the report’s recommendations.
