Russia launched a relentless assault on Kyiv overnight, with missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian capital, resulting in a series of powerful explosions, according to Reuters reporters in the city. By Friday morning, authorities in Kyiv reported that four people were killed and 20 wounded, with 16 individuals hospitalized.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the deaths in the capital and stated that search and rescue operations were ongoing at multiple locations. The city’s metro transport system was disrupted due to a Russian strike that damaged a train between stations, as stated by the city’s military administration.
The aerial attack led to fires in residential buildings across different parts of the city, according to authorities. The assault came after Russia vowed to retaliate against Ukraine following a drone attack on their bomber fleet.
In the wake of the attacks, Reuters reporters heard the sounds of Russian kamikaze drones buzzing overhead, accompanied by the firing of Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses. Reuters also witnessed a number of booming explosions powerful enough to shatter windows far from the impact sites and reported at least one large fire at the location of a drone strike.
Ukraine’s air force stated that the city was targeted with drones and Kalibr cruise missiles. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, mentioned that drones struck a high-rise apartment building and ignited a fire in the Darnytskyi district, where power cuts were possible. A Telegram channel also mentioned a shopping center in the area being on fire.
Tkachenko further stated that a fire had broken out in an apartment building in a western district and drone fragments were found in three districts.
In a daring attack last weekend, Ukrainian spies destroyed some of Russia’s strategic bomber aircraft using quadrocopter drones hidden in wooden sheds. US President Donald Trump discussed the unleashing of the attack with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who acknowledged that the Kremlin was planning an unspecified response to the Ukrainian attack on Russian airbases.
Trump suggested that it might be better for Ukraine and Russia to continue fighting for a while rather than rushing towards peace immediately. He likened the situation of the two countries to “two young children fighting like crazy in a park” during his phone conversation with Putin.
