Israeli forces on March 23rd shot and killed 15 Palestinian paramedics and civil defense staff, and subsequently buried them in a mass grave in Rafah’s Tel al-Sultan district. Initially, the Israeli military stated that their vehicles lacked headlights and emergency lights, which justified their suspect advance.
However, upon exhuming the bodies, both the UN and the Palestinian Red Crescent found a cellphone belonging to one of the deceased paramedics, Rifat Radwan, that recorded his last moments alive. The video footage clashed with the Israeli military’s account, showing that the vehicles did use emergency lights at the time of the shooting.
Helen Pidd engages in conversations with the Guardian’s Jerusalem correspondent, Bethan McKernan, regarding the attack, and with Amy Neilson, an emergency doctor who had worked with some of the deceased paramedics in Gaza.
