In a recent consumer poll, it was reported that nearly a third of online grocery shoppers have experienced receiving supermarket substitutions in their orders. This issue affects a significant number of people, with Asda leading the way as the worst offender for substitute products. Instances of bizarre replacements include receiving facial cleansers instead of drinking water, roasting tins in place of roast potatoes, and even sanitary towels taking the place of tortilla wraps. This problem is widespread, with Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Amazon Fresh also experiencing high rates of substituted items in orders. While some shoppers find these events amusing, those with special dietary requirements express frustration, especially when substitutions include unwanted meat or dairy products. Waitrose and Ocado have the lowest incidence of substitutions. However, consumers have recourse in these situations and can return unwanted items and request a refund.
