US military websites have taken down articles about Native American code talkers.

The Pentagon is reportedly removing content related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from its websites, including pages on US military history. The latest to suffer are articles praising the Native American code talkers from the second world war. The removal of these pages was first reported by Axios. Native Americans delivered critical messages in the first and second world wars using their tribal language in secret, a tactic adopted by the US military that even prompted enemy nations to study Native American languages post-war. More than 400 Navajo were part of the code talkers during the second world war, communicating in a language noted for its complexity. The department has been taking down webpages embellishing the role of women as well as decorated service members of non-white descent in recent weeks. This cleanse is believed to align with former President Donald Trump’s executive orders against DEI initiatives in the federal government. Despite an uproar, the Department of Defense responded to the scraping of the 442nd regimental combat team page, a unit of Japanese American soldiers, and later contended that the champions of DEI are incorrect in their belief that diversity strengthens the Department of Defense.
