Donald Trump has announced a restriction on foreign student visas for Harvard University, as stated by the White House on Wednesday. This decision is in response to the ongoing conflict between the Trump administration and the academic institution.
In April, Harvard University took legal action against the administration due to significant cuts in federally funded research for educational institutions across the United States.
Since then, the administration has insisted that Harvard implements various extensive reforms that the university believes would jeopardize its independence. Trump’s officials have reduced millions of dollars in research funding, and the administration has been aggressively attempting to prevent the university from enrolling international students. Some of these efforts have been halted by the courts.
Last week, the administration instructed U.S. consulates worldwide to conduct social media screenings for every visa applicant planning to attend Harvard University.
In a press release, the White House stated that while Trump is in favor of having international students in our institutions, he wants them to be individuals who can genuinely appreciate and affectionately love our country.
The proclamation issued by Trump will suspend the entry of any new Harvard student on a student visa into the United States, and orders the Secretary of State to consider revoking existing visas.
