US FDA’s top vaccine official, Dr Peter Marks, resigned recently after citing Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy Jr’s dissemination of misinformation and lies. Marks, who was responsible for Operation Warp Speed, the initiative responsible for Covid-19 vaccine development and distribution, had been praised by Donald Trump during his presidency. Marks made his resignation letter public, stating that truth and transparency were not valued by Kennedy and that undermining confidence in established vaccines was harmful to public health and a danger to the nation. Kennedy, who denies being anti-vaccine, has been leading a movement that questions vaccine safety and effectiveness. Marks’s departure comes after the Trump administration announced that they would be terminating 10,000 HHS employees. Experts have warned that Kennedy and other senior Trump-appointed health officials might challenge the authorization of the Covid-19 vaccines and study the safety of mifepristone, a commonly used drug for medication abortion.
