A 17-year-old boy, who allegedly attempted to board a Jetstar flight at Avalon Airport near Geelong with a shotgun, is now facing additional Commonwealth charges including attempted hijacking. Police claim that on March 6, the boy climbed through a fence and made his way to the aircraft where around 160 passengers were onboard, preparing for a flight to Sydney. The boy, whose identity is legally protected, did not appear in court on Friday when the Australian Federal Police commissioner requested a suppression order. Initially charged with 12 Victorian offenses, further federal charges include assaulting airline staff, attempting to hijack the plane, and endangering the safety of an aircraft with the intent to kill. The investigation involved a joint counter-terrorism task force, suggesting the boy may have communicated with foreign individuals or entities about the incident. Details of these communications, as well as information found in the boy’s vehicle, have been suppressed. Additionally, the boy is charged with possession of ammunition and a firearm without the necessary licenses, and for unsupervised driving on Beach Road. The boy is scheduled to return to court in April.
