Australian officials were unaware that Chinese warships were conducting live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea until a pilot alerted authorities. The live-fire drills caused nearly 50 commercial flights to be diverted, raising concerns about the lack of notice from the Chinese Government. Defence officials stated that they became aware of the drill through a radio broadcast picked up by airlines and not through official notification channels.
