‘We need to raise our voices’: Germany’s Pride parades confront growing violence | Germany

The organizers of the Christopher Street Day parade in Berlin are urging participants to be cautious in light of an increase in attacks on events for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) community across Germany. The parade, which will be held in the German capital this weekend to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people. However, behind the event’s party atmosphere, there is a more somber mood, as the organizers contend with a rise in attacks and hostility linked to the growth of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. Christopher Street Day organizers say Friedrich Merz’s new government is creating an atmosphere of fear by engaging in dog-whistle politics in an attempt to win voters away from the AfD.
