A new Western Forest will be established across parts of England, covering the areas from the Cotswolds to the Mendips. This project, which is one of the government’s national forests, aims to create 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) of woodland by 2030, with plans to plant 20 million trees by 2050. This will help increase tree coverage, wildlife habitats, mitigate the climate crisis, and provide greater access to nature for people living in cities and towns. The majority of the planned forest’s area is farmland, and the project seeks to integrate trees into the farmed landscape. The Western Forest will be led by the Forest of Avon and supported by up to £7.5 million in government funding over five years.
