Who is Friedrich Merz and what’s on his agenda in Germany?

Friedrich Merz, a former banker without prior government experience, is poised to become Germany’s next chancellor, supported by his CDU/CSU bloc securing the most votes in the pivotal federal election.

Controversially, during election campaigning, he garnered support from far-right elements in parliament, a maneuver that sought to underscore his diplomatic prowess yet stirred significant political controversy, especially given his insistence against a coalition government with the anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland party.

Though domestic political and economic challenges are formidable, Friedrich Merz’s global interrelations and foreign policy stance might define his chancellorship. Famed for his straightforward and pragmatic demeanor, Merz faces a complex global stage that requires careful handling, primarily regarding Germany’s dealings with the United States.

A self-described “pragmatist,” Merz will need to navigate changing global political scenarios with finesse, a departure from his previous reputation for simplifying tax rules. His in-tray boasts contentious issues including economic and social reforms and foreign policy challenges.
