Young girl, age six, passes away due to influenza after being sent home from a Sydney hospital twice | Healthcare

A six-year-old girl has tragically died from the flu after being twice dismissed from the Sydney Children’s hospital. The girl initially visited the emergency department at the Sydney Children’s hospital in Randwick on Monday and was later released following a clinical assessment.

A spokesperson for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) stated that the girl returned to the hospital “shortly after” and was diagnosed with influenza. Despite this, she was once again discharged with instructions for at-home care.

Following her release, the girl was admitted to the Northern Beaches hospital where she, unfortunately, passed away on Tuesday, as confirmed by the police.

The SCHN spokesperson expressed their deepest condolences to the family for their loss. Moreover, the hospital network will conduct an initial review into the patient’s care while she was at the Randwick hospital.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park expressed his deep sadness over the incident, emphasizing the need to understand how and why this tragedy occurred. He emphasized that the parents of the girl deserve clear answers.

The matter has been referred to the coroner and is under consideration for a joint Serious Adverse Event Review. Park acknowledged the distress that these events may cause to hospital staff.
