Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed regret that his meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump turned sour, noting that although the relationship between the two historically allied nations is strained, it can still be repaired. After a public confrontation where Trump and his Vice-President berated Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian leader defended himself in a Fox News interview but did not directly apologize to Trump. Zelenskyy was in Washington for high-stakes talks regarding a minerals deal that could have been a step towards U.S. security guarantees as part of a ceasefire to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. However, following the confrontation, his visit to the White House was cut short and the press conference concerning the minerals deal was cancelled. European leaders have reiterated their support for Ukraine while Trump’s allies praised his stance as “America First”. Zelenskyy maintained his appreciation for the American people’s support, adding that despite the current rift, he believes the relationship can be salvaged.
