Oscar-winning actress Zoe Saldana has issued an apology to the Mexican community who were offended by the controversial musical film “Emilia Pérez.” After receiving the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the film, a journalist informed Saldana that the movie had caused hurt to many Mexicans. In her response, Saldana expressed her deep regret for the offense caused and acknowledged the filmmakers’ intention to portray a story rooted in love and friendship. However, Saldana also maintained her belief that the criticisms against the film were unfounded, as its focus was on universal themes of survival and identity rather than an accurate representation of Mexico. She emphasized her willingness to engage in a respectful dialogue with the Mexican community to discuss the potential improvements that could be made to the movie. Saldana also spoke proudly of her heritage as the child of immigrant parents. The film, directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, faced various controversies during its release, including backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and criticism over lead actress Karla Sofia Gascón’s past inflammatory tweets. Nevertheless, the film secured the most nominations of the night with 13 but ultimately won only two awards for Saldana’s performance and for its original song. Sean Baker’s film “Anora” emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home the prestigious best picture award among its five accolades.
